Welcome to Living Places Sunderland

Living Places Sunderland brings the principles first tested through Living Places Copenhagen to Sunderland, translating them into a new urban housing typology shaped by its setting, community and climate.

The neighbourhood will form part of the wider Vaux development within Riverside Sunderland. A mix of townhouses, maisonettes and apartments will be arranged around a shared courtyard, creating a compact, landscape-led place with strong connections to the city, the Keel Line and Riverside Park.

Developed through a partnership between Sunderland City Council, VELUX and igloo, the project puts healthy indoor environments, lower-carbon construction and adaptability at its core. It aims to demonstrate how proven technologies can create better homes for people and planet at a scale that can be repeated elsewhere.

Living Places Principles

Applying igloo’s values and design principles that we apply to all our developments closely resonates with those of Living places. Using our learning from Vaux and Homes of 2030 we are excited to develop Plot 12 to revolutionize sustainable housing in the city. This will help Sunderland;

Addressing Local Climate & Sustainability Goals

Sunderland, like many UK cities, is working towards net-zero carbon targets. A Living Places project here could:
Use locally sourced, sustainable materials to cut transport emissions. Leverage off-site modular construction to reduce waste and speed up development.
Prioritize low-carbon energy sources, such as solar panels and heat pumps, to make homes self-sufficient.

Improving Housing Affordability & Energy Costs

Sunderland has a mix of new developments and older housing stock, where energy efficiency varies. Living Places homes, with passive design principles (good insulation, natural light, and ventilation), could cut energy bills significantly for residents. By adopting scalable, modular construction, these homes could be built cost-effectively to address the city’s housing demand

Enhancing Health & Well-being in Urban Areas

Sunderland has a strong urban renewal focus, especially around Riverside Sunderland and other regeneration projects. Living Places homes could integrate green spaces, rooftop gardens, and community hubs to improve well-being. Increased daylight exposure and better air quality would enhance physical and mental health for residents.

Supporting Sunderland’s Smart City Vision

Sunderland is developing 5G and smart infrastructure a perfect fit for energy- efficient, smart homes. Living Places houses could be equipped with smart ventilation, lighting, and heating systems to optimize energy use.

Building on Existing Regeneration Efforts

Sunderland is investing in sustainable construction through projects like the Riverside Sunderland Masterplan. A VELUX Living Places initiative could complement existing efforts, bringing in expertise, funding, and innovation.
